Message from Register




I began my career with the Register of Deeds office in December 1976, and served as both a Deputy Register and Assistant Register during my 28 years of service under former Register of Deeds, the Rev. Dennis W. “Bud” Cameron.  Upon Mr. Cameron’s retirement in 2004, I was first elected as Register of Deeds that same year, again in 2008 and most recently in 2012.

My job is one of service.  We are required and mandated by the laws of our state to follow strict and very complex guidelines in the performance of our duties. 

The services provided by the Surry County Register of Deeds office are an extremely important and valuable function of county government.  The purpose of the office is to record, maintain and make accessible to the public all county land records, and the vital records (birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, etc.) of our county’s citizens. 

It is a great honor and one that I am humbled by that the people of this county have entrusted me to oversee this incredibly important position.  I know that dealing with any governmental office can be trying and I always try to think about how I would want to be treated in most every circumstance … and then simply apply the Golden Rule in my service to the public.
