Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Diane AndersonMy name is Diane Anderson and I have been a breastfeeding peer counselor since 2004.  It is my responsibility to offer information and support to help moms who choose to breastfeed their infants.  Although breastfeeding is the natural way to feed babies, some moms may have trouble starting out.  Moms who participate in the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program usually breastfeed longer due to the extra support they receive.

Some of my duties include:

  • Scheduling clinic or home visits to assist with latch and positioning
  • Visiting with new moms in the hospital
  • Arranging breast pump loans
  • Staying in contact with moms during and after pregnancy
  • Responding to the Breastfeeding Help Line: 336-401-8461, Monday-Friday between 8:15 am-5:00 pm.
  • Responding to the Afterhours/Weekend Lactation Help Line 336-374-9549, Monday through Friday, between 5pm-9:30pm, and daily on weekends until 9:30pm

Currently, the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center has two International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) on staff who offer monthly breastfeeding classes in both English and Spanish.  For more information about finding an IBCLC, click here.
