Soil and Water Conservation

The Surry Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) works diligently to achieve the mission of conserving and protecting the natural resources of Surry County.  To accomplish this mission, Surry SWCD continues to build upon the success of the programs currently offered and seeks to secure additional financial and technical resources from other State and Federal programs.  By working closely with individuals, landowners and partnering agencies Surry SWCD utilizes every opportunity to not only protect, but also showcase Surry County’s natural beauty.

The Surry SWCD administers the Surry County Voluntary Agricultural District Program.  The intention of this program is to preserve farmland through voluntary participation and to enhance the identity of an agricultural community.  It also educates farmers and the general public by identifying the area, through signage, as an agricultural region.  Participants sign conservation agreements stating they will follow conservation practices with assistance from Surry SWCD.
