Surry County Park and Recreation

Scenic Bikeway

The Surry Scenic Bikeway is a 513 mile bike route that was created to promote recreational tourism, community connectivity, healthy lifestyled / wellness, and the identifications of scenic, recreation, and historic attractions throughout Surry County. Ride past wineries of the Yadkin Valley, experience the rolling foothills and scenic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains or cruise in the shadow of Pilot Mountain. There are eight different routes that may be chosen as well as parking facilities. For further information please contact the Parks and Recreation Department.

In 2004, representatives from the County Recreation and Planning Departments, the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center, Start with Your Heart Program, NCDOT and each Municipality began discussing the possibility of a countywide scenic bike route.  Further in the process, the above representatives along with various local cyclists from across the county met on two occasions for route determination.

The purpose of establishing this route is multifold.  This route attempts to promote a unified effort to expand recreational tourism, community connectivity, healthy lifestyles/wellness, and the identifications of attractions.  Additionally, the identification and approval of such a route could possibly increase future funding opportunities.  Initially we would attempt to acquire signage to mark the route and the production of maps to be placed at visitors centers, Chamber of Commerce, etc.

In April 2004, the Surry County Board of Commissioners approved the Proposed Scenic Bikeway and by October 2004, each Municipal Board had approved it.  In November 2004, the 513 mile route was adopted by the Rural Planning Organization (RPO) and will be presented to the Planning Division of the NCDOT for incorporation to the Surry County Transportation (Thoroughfare) Plan.

We will update the County website as to the progress of the incorporation of this plan as well as implementation efforts.

Maps will be available in the Spring of 2010. Route sign installation will begin in Spring 2010.

Thank you for giving this project a successful start.
